Africa – Ras Nungwi

After the safari portion of our trip, we decided to extend our vacation to include a beach resort on Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania, in the Indian Ocean.  We stayed there for X nights and then returned to the US

Ras Nungwi – Unfortunately, I visited their site as I am posting this and they are closed due to a fire earlier this year.  They promise to re-open, but no target date was provided.

Ras Nungui is a resort on the northern most portion of the island of Zanzibar. It is relatively small with only about 30 rooms. There are a series of beach front cottages with two rooms in each and then a back area off the beach with rooms in a long connected row. The location is very secluded, being almost 1.5 hours from the Zanzibar airport or main town of Stonetown. The facility is very beautiful, the grounds are well maintained, the food was excellent, and the diving very good (with good equipment). The downside, for us, was that it was too laid back for our taste. Maybe we are just typical Americans with short attention spans and a Disneyland mentality but once you got past the scuba diving, there wasn’t anything to do each day but sit in the sun by the pool or on the beach. There were no sun fish sailboats, ocean kayaks, wind surfing, or wave runners. There was no beach volleyball or pool volleyball or other group activities. And this lack of alternate activities was compounded by the fact that if you wanted to go into Stonetown for a visit, it was a 1.5 hour trip each way!! We would only recommend Ras Nungui if you really like doing nothing all day and waiting until 8 pm for dinner. And don’t go there is you are homophobic. Like I say, maybe we have too much of a McDonald’s Drive through mentality. We also seem to be lacking the relaxation gene…
